Winamp part of Netscape Communicator 4.7 |
|
Netscape released a new version of it's Communicator about two weeks ago, including Winamp as a new component for digital audio playback. Winamp and Netscape are both owned by America Online (AOL), who have taken a further step to push digital audio on the Internet. This is a big step for Netscape, who has to compete against Microsoft's Internet Explorer package, which includes the Microsoft MediaPlayer for digital audio playback.
The Winamp version included in the new Communicator is called "Winamp 2.5/LITE". It is actually the 2.5c basic version of Winamp that does not support MS-Audio or MJuice. When installing the Communicator, Winamp is automatically installed without bothering about any any setup options. After the installation, SHOUTcast Streams and MP3 files are automatically associated with Winamp. Winamp though is not integrated into Netscape's interface and still works as an independent program, pretty much like we have seen with the RealPlayer. Updating to new releases of Winamp in the future can be accomplished via Netscape's SmartUpdate.
